BUD  SHANK
Bud Shank

1926 - 2009

It is with great sadness that MarsJazz announces the passing of a great musician and human being - Bud Shank. Bud died at his home in Tucson of a coronary embolism on Thursday, April 2, only one day after recording in San Diego with his west coast trio of Mike Wofford, Bob Magnusson, and Joe La Barbera, and British saxophonist Jake Fryer. By all accounts Bud played with spare eloquence and had a great time with his longtime friends. Not a bad way for a Jazz musician to go out - to make a beautiful final recording on his last full day on Earth.
There was a free concert in Bud's honor on Saturday, May 23, hosted by the LA Jazz Institute. Sixty years of LA jazz musicians performed and/or spoke about Bud, including 92-year-old bassist Howard Rumsey, former owner of the Lighthouse and Concerts by the Sea, and composer/arranger Johnny Mandel. A fitting send-off to a Jazz Legend and a wonderful human being.
Keep swinging on the other side, Bud. You'll never be forgotten here.
