BUD  SHANK
Bud Shank

BUD SHANK, the elder statesman on bebop alto saxophone, turns 82 years young in May 2008. Already a veteran of the big bands of Charlie Barnett and Stan Kenton, he came to prominence in the 50's via a series of acclaimed recordings for the Pacific Jazz label, and after the rock revolution of the 60's, gained renewed popularity in the 70's with the L.A. Four. Called "awesomely fluent" by The New York Times, Bud's west coast background has caused some to wrongly associate him with the "cool school", when in reality his impassioned bop-based improvisations are anything but "cool". As Downbeat has said, "he's not getting older, he's getting more ferocious."

Bud's available in an exquisite duo with Bill Mays (check out their new duo CD Beyond The Red Door), or add bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Joe LaBarbera for a stellar quartet. He's also toured in Brazil with pianist Joao Donato, and would love to bring Joao's trio to the U.S. In addition to these options, Bud has great big band charts, as heard on his new Jazzed Media CD Taking the Long Way Home, and is much in demand as a soloist with college and community big bands.
