CINDY BLACKMAN SANTANA, a drummer/composer/bandleader in the style of her late mentor Tony Williams, brings a power and dexterity to the drum kit that shatters any sexual stereotypes about female instrumentalists. Now Cindy has two working bands, her quintet EXPLORATIONS - with Marc Cary and Zaccai Curtis on electric keyboards, Antoine Roney on saxes, and Rashaan Carter on acoustic bass - and her ANOTHER LIFETIME quartet - with Marc Cary on electric keyboard, guitarist Aurelien Budynek, and Jaco's son Felix Pastorius on electric bass. The latter project is Cindy's tribute to Tony's seminal 1970's fusion band Lifetime, and after hearing them over several nights at Blues Alley, I can say that they are on a par with Tony's group and the other great fusion bands of the 70's. When Cindy's not doing her own thing, you'll see her performing with other high-profile rock and jazz artists, including her husband Carlos Santana.
